Introduction

Integrated business processes are the bloodstream of SAP systems. Every Sales Order, Purchase Order, Delivery, and Invoice has to flow smoothly, not just within SAP, but across EDI partners (customer, vendors, 3PL partners) banks, warehouses, tax portals.

Here’s the paradox: SAP S/4HANA projects have plenty of sophisticated automation tools, but they rarely help functional consultants in their manual tests. Instead, those tools get pushed into the narrow niche of automation testers. Functional consultants treat them like mythical dragons, complicated, dangerous, and likely to drag them away from their real work into procedural swamps.

The result? Slow testing cycles, dependency on integration specialists, and endless waiting for external partners to provide messages or confirmations.

Changing the story with simulation agents

The better path is not to force functional consultants into scripting or automation frameworks, but to give them simulation agents that mimic the system environment.

Instead of saying: “learn a test framework and run automated scripts,” we can say: “here are agents that simulate your missing EDI partner, your unavailable 3rd party/legacy system and you can test with them right now.”

This changes the game:

  • No competition with automation teams.
  • No learning curve with complex frameworks and procedural delays.
  • Consultants get something they instantly understand: realistic test conditions on demand, using actual historical production data.

With Int4 Suite, simulation agents provide a simple interface: the consultant performs the transaction in SAP, the agent feeds in authentic historical test data, and then automatically checks whether the newly generated EDI or non-EDI message matches what was sent in production.

  • Consultant in the OTC team replays historical ORDERS from the largest customer and verifies whether, after pricing condition changes, the system still calculates correctly.
  • Consultant tests goods receipt with historical DESADV data; agent compares the new EDI message against the production one.
  • Consultant issues a sales invoice (INVOIC) and agent validates it against the original production invoice, checking VAT rules.

By equipping functional consultants with Int4 Suite agents:

Fetching delta records in Success Factors can be straightforward when dealing with a single entity using filters and the lastModifiedDateTime field. However, the process becomes more complex when multiple entities are involved, each with its own lastModifiedDateTime field. Traditional methods, such as using properties or XSLT mapping, can be cumbersome and may lead to inefficient full loads from the system.

To address this challenge, I have developed a Groovy script that simplifies the process of retrieving delta records from multiple entities in Success Factors using the OData API. This script ensures efficient data retrieval without the complexity of traditional methods.

In this blog, I will walk you through the code and demonstrate how to use it to fetch delta records from various entities in Success Factors.

Step 1: Declare Properties in the Content Modifier

The first step is to declare the necessary properties in the Content Modifier. Below is an image showing the configuration of the Content Modifier:

Explanation of Properties

Full_Dump

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: {{Full Load}} // Externalised Parameter
  • Description: This property indicates whether a full data dump is required. If set to true, the integration will fetch all records, not just delta records. This property is externalised.

Timestamp

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: Expression
  • Source Value: ${date:now:ddMMyyyy}
  • Data Type: java.lang.String
  • Description: This property captures the current timestamp in the specified format. It is used to mark the time of the current execution.

ThisRun

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: Expression
  • Source Value: ${date:now:yyyy-MM-dd’T’HH:mm:ss.SSS}
  • Data Type: java.lang.String
  • Description: This property stores the timestamp of the current run, which will be used as the LastRun timestamp in the next execution.

LastRun

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: Local Variable
  • Source Value: Last_Execution
  • Description: This property holds the timestamp of the last successful run. It is used to determine the starting point for fetching delta records.

Initial_Timestamp

  • Action: Create

  • Description: This needs to be provided when you are deploying the integration for the first time. Essentially, this will be your integration start date. You can also mention that the date could be the Go Live Date.

Need_Initial

  • Description: When you are running the integration for the first time, this has to be set to true so that your Initial Timestamp becomes your Last Execution date. Since your integration won’t have the Last run available, for the first run, Need_Initial has to be true. After deployment, you can remove “true” and redeploy the integration. This will provide you with a full load, and subsequent runs will only fetch delta changes.

From_Date

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: Constant
  • Source Value: {{From Date}} // Externalised Parameter
  • Description: This property allows users to specify the starting date for fetching delta records. If provided, it does not override the LastRun timestamp but ignores the last execution and runs based on the dates provided by the admin, giving more control over the data retrieval period. The From_Date is the start date of the range. It will provide the delta records that have changed from this date.

To_Date

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: Constant
  • Source Value: {{To Date}} /// Externalised Parameter
  • Description: This property allows users to specify the ending date for fetching delta records. If provided, it does not override the LastRun timestamp but ignores the last execution and runs based on the dates provided by the admin, giving more control over the data retrieval period. The To_Date is the end date of the range. It will provide the delta records that have changed up to this date.

Troubleshooting

  • Action: Create
  • Source Type: Constant
  • Source Value: {{Troubleshooting}} // Externalised Parameter
  • Description: This property should be set to True whenever you are using From_Date, To_Date, or Full_Dump. This ensures that the scheduled integration is not disturbed, allowing for smooth troubleshooting and testing without affecting the regular data processing schedule.

Declare necessary properties. The Content Modifier is connected to the Router.

Step 2: Router Condition

Next, you need to set up a Router Condition to store the Initial Timestamp as the last execution time when the Need_Initial property is passed as true. This ensures that the integration can handle initial loads and subsequent delta loads effectively. The Expression Type in the Router will be NON XML, and the condition will be ${property.Need_Initial} = ‘true’.

When you remove the Need_Initial property, the integration will perform a normal run and will be passed through the Default Route.

Set up a Router Condition. Initial Run Path connects to Write Variable; Normal Run connects to Groovy Script.

Step 3: Configuring Write Variable

In this step, you will configure the Write Variable to store the Initial_Timestamp property with the current timestamp into the Last_Execution property. This ensures that the last execution time is updated correctly for future runs.

Write Variable Configuration:

  • Set the target property to Last_Execution.
  • Assign the value of the Initial_Timestamp property, which contains the current timestamp.

This step ensures that the integration accurately tracks the last execution time, enabling efficient delta record fetching in subsequent runs.

Connect Write Variable to End Message.

Step 4: Groovy Script Explanation

Here’s the Groovy script that helps fetch delta records from multiple entities in Success Factors:

Step 5: Using Request Reply & Connecting with the Receiver

Request Reply:

  • Use the Request Reply step to connect with the Success Factors OData V2 Adapter.

Configure Connections:

  • Configure the connections to your Success Factors system. Ensure that you have the correct credentials and endpoint URLs.

Select Entities and Fields:

  • In the Processing section, select the entities and fields you need to fetch delta records from.

Add Filter Condition:

  • After configuring the entities and fields, click on Finish.
  • Add the filter condition: &$filter=${property.QueryFilter}. This ensures that the query uses the filter constructed by the Groovy script to fetch only the delta records.

Connect Request Reply to Process Call.

Step 6: Process Call Configuration in Main Integration Process

The Process Call is used to update the LastRun date to ensure accurate tracking of the last execution time. It also checks if the run is for troubleshooting by verifying the Troubleshooting property, allowing for specific handling or logging during debugging. Configuration involves selecting the Local Integration Process, such as a Troubleshooting Process.

Step 7: Configuring Local Integration Process

In this step, we configure the Local Integration Process to check if the run is for troubleshooting. This involves using a router to verify the Troubleshooting property. If the Troubleshooting property is set to true, the integration will consider this as a test run or debugging is taking place, and it will not update the Last_Execution date. If it is blank, the process will update the Last_Execution date to ensure accurate tracking of the last execution time.

Step 8: Router Condition in Troubleshooting Process

Next, you need to set up a Router Condition to verify if the Troubleshooting property is passed as true. If it is true, the integration will pass through Route 1. The Expression Type in the Router will be NON XML, and the condition will be ${property.Troubleshooting} = ‘true’.

If the Troubleshooting property is not passed as true, the integration will pass through Route 2 (False), which is the default route. In this case, it will store the ThisRun timestamp into the Last_Execution property, ensuring that the last execution time is updated correctly.

True Route connects to End; False Route connects to Write Variable.

Step 9: Configuring Write Variable in Troubleshooting Process

In this step, you will configure the Write Variable to store the ThisRun property with the current timestamp into the Last_Execution property. This ensures that the last execution time is updated correctly for future runs.

Write Variable Configuration:

  • Set the target property to Last_Execution.
  • Assign the value of the ThisRun property, which contains the current timestamp.

This step ensures that the integration accurately tracks the last execution time, enabling efficient delta record fetching in subsequent runs.

Connect Write Variable to End.

Final Integration Overview

After performing all the steps mentioned above, this is how your integration should look like. We have started it with the Start Timer, but this can vary based on your specific requirements. The integration is designed to handle both initial and subsequent runs efficiently, ensuring accurate data retrieval and processing. By following the outlined scenarios, you can customise the integration to meet your specific needs, whether it’s for a full load, date range, or delta records.

As this blog focuses on fetching delta records, we haven’t configured the Target System, which could be FTP or any third-party system. You might need to structure the data according to the target system using Message Mapping or XSLT Mapping. Additionally, you may need to handle exceptional subprocesses and process successful and failed responses from the third-party system. Ensure to add the Process Call at the end so that it only stores the run when the integration is successfully completed.

Integration Deployment Configuration:

Go Live Configuration

1. Enter the Initial Timestamp with the Go Live date or any required date (format: 9999-12-31T00:00:00).
2. Set Need_Initial to true to consider the Initial Timestamp.
3. Save and deploy the integration.

4. Go back to Configure and remove true from Need_Initial.
5. Deploy the integration again.
6. The first run will perform a full load, and subsequent runs will provide delta changes.

Date Range Configuration

1. Enter the From_Date and To_Date to fetch records updated between these dates (format: 9999-12-31T00:00:00).
2. Set Troubleshooting to true so this deployment won’t be considered the last run.
3. Save and deploy the integration.

4. Go back to Configure, remove true from Troubleshooting and clear the dates from From_Date and To_Date.
5. Save and Deploy the integration again.
6. The integration will now run as scheduled and provide delta records.

Scenario 3: Full Dump Configuration

1. Set Full_Dump to true to fetch all active records.
2. Set Troubleshooting to true so this deployment won’t be considered the last run.
3. Save and deploy the integration.

4. Go back to Configure, remove true from Full_Dump and Troubleshooting.
5. Save and deploy the integration again.
6. The integration will now run as scheduled and provide delta records.

Note: Always save and deploy the integration after changing its configuration.

Additional Note: If you are using a Start Timer in your integration, make sure to change it to run once, or it will provide the output as scheduled.

          Get more value from S/4HANA with SAP Extensibility options

          I will focus on existing and new SAP partners who wish to connect their cloud offerings to S/4HANA customers or migrate their existing add-on to ABAP clean-code code. In this article, I will explain in more depth from a customer’s point of view which Extensibility Options fit the best different use cases for an SAP S/4HANA Cloud system.

          As Software vendors like SAP consistently deliver best-practice solutions that should fit multiple customers. This means there will always be a gap between the requirements for your business processes and the software solution delivered to support them. There are several ways to close this gap. You can manage the gap by supporting it with manual procedures, but you can also try to solve it by extending your software solution with other solutions and custom development. In this article, I will focus on the following topics:

          1. Adopt your system by customizing your business processes
          2. Add ready-made solutions like SAP cloud products, SAP third-party add-ons, and SAP cloud partner solutions
          3. Personalize the UI using S/4HANA Personalization Options
          4. Build your own extensions using S/4HANA Extensibility Options

          Customize your business processes.

          The best and cheapest option to solve the gap is to customize your business process to fit into SAP’s best practice processes. By using the predefined templates and configuration options of S/4HANA, you can tailor your business processes to your needs. For S/4HANA public cloud, there is a specific cloud application called SAP Central Business Configuration, which enables you to scope, configure, and implement end-to-end business processes for your cloud solution from a central place. After setting up your S/4HANA Cloud public edition, you can use the Implementation Activities app for further configurations, such as in SAP ECC and other S/4HANA editions, using transaction SPRO.

          SAP cloud products, SAP third-party add-ons, and SAP cloud partner solutions

          When a gap remains between your business processes and the customizing, you should consider SAP cloud products, SAP S/4HANA on-stack third-party add-ons, or side-by-side SAP cloud partner solutions in the SAP store.

          As mentioned in my previous article, SAP simplified the supported processes in the S/4HANA Cloud public edition. It moved functionality to other SAP Cloud products, providing even more functionality in their domain. These solutions can provide even more functionality than previously available in SAP ECC. In the last couple of years, SAP has invested a lot in integrating these SAP Cloud products with S/4HANA and has now positioned the complete integrated portfolio as Cloud ERP. However, with the simplification of S/4HANA, customers can also choose products from an SAP competitor to solve the missing functionality in S/4HANA for some domains. This results in some challenges that I will discuss later in this article.

          Another way to solve the gap between business processes and SAP software is to install a third-party SAP add-on to the S/4HANA system or connect your system to a SAP side-by-side cloud partner solution. In the past, add-ons were often considered, and for SAP ECC, many add-ons were available. But for S/4HANA Cloud editions, this isn’t the case yet. SAP has previously asked its partners to build their solutions outside S/4HANA, in SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), and provide this as an SAP cloud partner solution. SAP even set up a partner program to run these solutions as a SAAS offering on BTP, which makes it very easy for S/4HANA customers to consume these partner solutions. The possibility of closing the gap by providing SAAS offerings on BTP by a SAP cloud partner is a crucial aspect of SAP’s strategy to extend its footprint into the market. And from that aspect, I expect many more SAP cloud partner solutions soon.

          However, besides the SAAS offering, I expect many more S/4HANA on-stack add-on products soon. SAP has launched the embedded ABAP Cloud stack of S/4HANA Cloud public edition 2023. This allows smaller SAP partners to deliver their add-ons based on ABAP Cloud to customers via a controlled git-based multi-off delivery. A SAP certification for this addon is unnecessary because the code follows the SAP clean core paradigm, which will be checked when you deploy your code. This removes the barrier for many SAP partners, consulting companies, and independent consultants to build and provide add-ons to their customers.

          S/4HANA Personalization Options

          In some cases, the gap is small and depends on the user of the S/4HANA system. You can influence how users work with the system by providing the proper business role. Authorizations and using default values in the Fiori Launchpad already allow you to influence and limit user entry, but you can go further.

          S/4HANA Uis, based on Fiori Elements, can be configured to present data in a personalized way. You can add and remove filters and their values, change how the data is displayed, and store and share this personalized look and feel.

          S/4HANA Key User Extensibility – UI adaption

          Sometimes, these personalization capabilities aren’t enough, and you want to adapt the UI and change the look and feel of the applications to your needs. You can change or hide titles, buttons, and label names and reorder and hide fields and sections. If the S/4HANA app supports this option and you have the proper authorization, you will find the UI Adapt button in the menu of your Fiori Launchpad profile.

          UI adaptation, default values, and personalization are strong capabilities of S/4HANA Cloud that can improve user experiences and reduce users’ knowledge gaps.

          S/4HANA Extensibility Options

          For some business processes, more than all of the options above are needed, and the only solution is to use the other S/4HANA Extensibility Options. My previous article mentioned that SAP provides eight possible S/4HANA Extensibility Options, as seen in the picture above. Before I elaborate on them, I want to address two topics that are relevant to understanding the S/4HANA Extensibility options:

          1. On-stack extensions versus Side-by-Side extensions
          2. Low-code versus Pro-Code

          On-stack extensions versus Side-by-Side extensions

          On-stack extensions are S/4HANA extensibility options embedded in the S/4HANA system. All capabilities, authorizations, support, and maintenance are directly dependent on the availability of your S/4HANA system, and these extensibility options are included in the S/4HANA licenses. Because these extensibility options run on the same instance as the S/4HANA system, they are tightly coupled. This allows for adopting extensions to standard S/4HANA processes and handling big datasets with excellent performance.

          Side-by-side extensions are S/4HANA Extensibility Options, which run on their own instances in the SAP BTP Cloud environment. These extensions are loosely coupled with S/4HANA. These solutions will exchange data with S/4HANA through APIs and events. These extensibility options are primarily suitable when:

          • The on-stack extension significantly impacts the available S/4HANA runtime resources;
          • Casual or external users must participate. Still, you don’t want to give them direct or full access to S/4HANA;
          • you need an extension, which, besides S/4HANA, also needs data from other cloud resources;
          • you need solution extensions for multiple S/4HANA systems.

          Low-code versus Pro-Code

          The S/4HANA extensibility options are split into low-code and pro-code options. The pro-code option is the most flexible and powerful option for realizing your extensions, but you also need a professional SAP developer to build the extension. In many cases, you can realize the extensions by just adopting some slight modifications using applications that do this through minimal coding, supported mainly by a visual approach. In this case, you don’t need a professional SAP developer in the IT department; you can let business users with some coding knowledge build the extension. These types of business users who are using low-code applications are also known as citizen developers.

          S/4HANA Key User Extensibility Option.

          The S/4HANA Key User Extensibility Option is a low-code extensibility option in the S/4HANA system. It provides a set of Fiori apps to manage the most common changes needed to User Interfaces (UIs) and business processes.

          Extend standard SAP UIs, reports, and APIs with custom fields.

          With Custom Fields, you can create new custom fields and extend existing SAP data structures with calculated fields. This allows you to customize applications and adapt their UIs, reports, email templates, form templates, and APIs.

          This custom fields capability allows storing, calculating, and using additional fields in your S/4HANA applications. It will follow SAP’s Clean Core strategy and is stable for upgrades and future-proof. With this option, you don’t need to improperly use existing SAP fields of SAP applications, which has happened a lot in the past in SAP ECC.

          Influence the behavior of a S/4HANA application.

          With Custom Logic, you can influence the behavior of standard S/4HANA applications. It will replace all the options we had in the past in SAP ECC, such as user exists, modifications, implicit enhancements, and enhancement spots. SAP has released predefined extension points in its standard SAP code lines, which can be influenced by custom code. Predefined extension points are available as business add-ins (BAdIs), and you can add the logic you need with this app. You can use a limited set of statements to influence the behavior of standard SAP business objects, interact with your custom business objects in the system, and even call services outside the S/4HANA system to create, update, or retrieve data from an external resource. To call services outside S/4HANA, you can use the Custom Communication Scenario app to configure the connectivity.

          Implementing released BAdIs is the only future-proof solution in SAP’s Clean Core strategy that can influence the standard logic.

          Building simple Custom Business Objects, transactions, and APIs.

          With the Custom Business Object app, a citizen developer can develop small custom S/4HANA applications and backend services for new developments in S/4HANA and replace current custom-built applications in SAP ECC. The app allows you to create a custom data model with nodes and fields, add limited business logic such as determinations and validations, and generate the custom business object, the UI, and the backend service. When artifacts like fields, structures, value help, and methods are needed for multiple Custom Business Objects, you can use the Customer Reusable Elements app to build these artifacts.

          The custom business object can be used in the custom logic of a standard SAP application. It can also be accessed as a Fiori application by S/HANA users when the object is added as an extension to an existing catalog using the app Custom Catalog Extensions. The custom business object can also be used by applications outside S/4HANA when the object’s backend service is generated and made publicly available after you process it with the app Custom Communication Scenario.

          Make external web resources available.

          The Custom Tile app allows you to create Fiori tiles in your Fiori Launchpad to access external web applications. Since the user must already have access rights to external web applications, this solution is best for other SAP cloud applications, publicly accessible internet applications, and custom-built and third-party applications running on SAP BTP, which shares the same identity provider as S/4HANA.

          Assemble analytical reports and custom data sources.

          In the clean core strategy of S/4HANA, you can’t access SAP tables directly anymore, but you should access your data through so-called CDS views. The CDS Views can be a projection layer on top of these tables but can also read data from other CDS views. The CDS views serve as a source for transactional and analytical apps, value-helps, APIs, and data extraction. SAP uses these CDS views to migrate its existing data model slightly to a new Virtual Data Model. The Virtual Data Model of SAP has many CDS views, but only the released CDS views can be used by SAP partners and customers.

          The Custom CDS View app allows customers to assemble custom CDS views for analytical and read-only external APIs. They are based on released CDS views and other custom content, such as custom business objects and other custom CDS views. With the app, you can create a CDS View that selects fields from multiple data sources and adds new calculated fields. You can refine these chosen fields’ properties, add filters to refine the result set and add and maintain parameters for the usage within your view.

          The Custom CDS View app also allows users to create CDS Views with analytical capabilities, the so-called Analytical CDS View. These views can be used in S/4HANA analytical tooling, the S/4HANA query builder app Custom Analytical Queries, S/4HANA KPI Designer, and APF Configuration Modeling.

          Reports and overview page.

          In SAP’s Clean Core strategy, SAP Fiori is the only supported UI for custom-built applications in S/4HANA. This means that all UI capabilities of SAP ECC, such as ABAP reports, ABAP dynpro, BSP, and WebDynpro, are obsolete and should be replaced.

          However, this is easy for Custom Business Objects or custom CDS views. When these artifacts are exposed as S/4HANA external APIs, these APIs can be used as a source for the Fiori Elements tooling. With this tooling, a Fiori List Reports, Fiori Analytical List Page, and Fiori Overview Page can be generated in a few steps. A frontend developer can take this as a base, add the needed UI capabilities to the generated application, and deploy it to the S/4HANA system as a Custom Fiori App.

          Real-time analytic dashboards.

          When the analytical capabilities in S/4HANA and Fiori Elements don’t fit your business needs, you can always use a side-by-side tool like SAP Analytics Cloud. This is appropriate when using S/4HANA and other data resources to analyze and predict business outcomes and want to use the outcomes for business intelligence and enterprise planning.

          S/4HANA supports this Extensibility Option by providing a live data connection between S/4HANA and SAP Analytics Cloud based on SAP’s optimized InA protocol. This allows SAP Analytics Cloud to query S/4HANA’s data sources in real time and react directly to changes.

          The SAP Analytics Cloud Extensibility Option allows real-time dashboarding of business processes. The live data connection, machine learning, and artificial intelligence capabilities of SAP Analytics Cloud will also take the S/4HANA-supported business process to the next level, which isn’t possible with SAP ECC.

          Process automation and interaction with occasional SAP users.

          In most companies, a business process starts with collecting, checking, and approving information before it is entered into an ERP system. This process is usually manual and supported by unstructured data tools such as email, spreadsheets, documents, and notes.

          The market recognized this and developed more structured, low-code solutions to support these processes. SAP entered this market, too, with SAP Build, a citizen development tool for building workflows and simple UIs to collect, check, and approve data for users who do not need access to a S/4HANA system.

          When SAP examined these processes, it saw another significant improvement opportunity. Most processes had repeated steps, such as collecting and interpreting data from known sources and manually entering data into applications and unstructured tools, which robotic engines and artificial intelligence can easily automate without interaction with a user. This process automation capability was also added to the SAP Build portfolio.

          SAP positioned SAP Build Process Automation as a side-by-side extension possibility for additional customer-specific processes and automation on top of S/4HANA. It will also replace the customer ABAP workflows we know from SAP ECC, which is no longer possible in S/4HANA.

          Integrate your business processes in the cloud.

          Many companies use software products other than SAP to automate their business processes. They want to work more closely with their business partners and can gain value by outsourcing part of their business processes to them. Companies also want to automate data exchange between ERP and their manufacturing systems.

          ERP systems have exchanged data with each other almost from the beginning. In the early days, users had to make manual entries, but nowadays, they can use files and spreadsheets or even connect systems with APIs using EDI or internet-based networks. The data model should be aligned, and integration products should be introduced to map the content and API structures of the connected systems.

          Integration becomes even more critical with the simplification of S/4HANA and the move of business functionality to other Cloud products. Traditional integration, as we know from SAP ECC, is not enough. By moving functionality to other cloud products, S/4HANA also loses the tight coupling between the business processes we had in SAP ECC. APIs alone are not enough to solve this issue. S/4HANA needs to provide notification events to connected systems when situations in the supported business processes are changed. The traditional integration architecture needs to shift to an event-driven architecture, precisely what SAP offers with its Cloud Integration Suite and S/4HANA Cloud events and APIs.

          Cloud Integration Suite offers traditional EAI/B2B integration options, the capability to connect to non-SAP products using open connectors, and SAP Graph, a fully event-driven unified data model on top of SAP’s Cloud products.

          Building your enterprise-grade cloud applications

          When do you need a professional developer to build your custom application? As soon as you cannot solve the gap in our S/4HANA business process by connecting other software products, building process automation workflows and UIs, or modifying standard SAP screens and logic with key user extensibility options, you need a professional developer.

          Of course, you can build this application on any platform in any language. However, when data from SAP Cloud products is involved, creating applications with SAP tooling is the best solution. From the perspective of S/4HANA, you can develop the application on-stack or side-by-side.

          On-stack is the best solution if you need tight integration with your S/4HANA data or users. In this case, you build your application directly with ABAP Cloud on the embedded ABAP environment, and you can use all of S/4HANA’s capabilities. This is also known as SAP S/4HANA Cloud Developer Extensibility.

          On the other hand, when you need an application loosely coupled from S/4HANA and mostly runs standalone or heavenly, depending on other SAP cloud products, the side-by-side extension SAP Build Code on BTP is the best solution. With SAP Build Code, a professional developer can build enterprise-grade Java and JavaScript cloud applications fast and with high quality, supported by AI-based code generation.

          SAP BTP also offers an ABAP environment for developing side-by-side applications. When you upgrade to the S/4HANA cloud, this environment can be used to build new, future-proof, clean-core ABAP applications while still running SAP ECC. After the upgrade, these applications can later be moved as SAP S/4HANA Cloud Developer Extensibility of the embedded ABAP environment of your S/4HANA. However, you can also move your SAP S/4HANA Cloud Developer Extensibility applications to the SAP BTP ABAP Cloud environment when the applications significantly impact the runtime resources on the performance or cost of your S/4HANA system.

          As I will explain in my next article, the SAP BTP ABAP environment can also be a good option for SAP solution partners to provide additional S/4HANA functionality in a software-as-a-service model.

          Conclusion

          SAP supports many different S/4HANA Extensibility Options described in this article to help customers solve gaps in supporting their business processes with S/4HANA. SAP analyzes customers’ needs by examining SAP ECC and translating this into options, considering their clean-core strategy for S/4HANA. This allows customers to adjust their business processes and offers many opportunities for SAP solution partners and cloud vendors to add value to the SAP ecosystem.

          Introduction

          SAP Cloud Integration version 6.54.xx comes with new feature, where in one can create Datatype and Messagetype as reusable design time artifacts in Cloud Integration capability of SAP Integration Suite

          This feature is available only in SAP Integration Suite standard and above service plans.

          SAP Cloud Integration version 6.54.xx software update is planned on mid of July 2024 (date and time subjected to change).

          Create DataType:

          1. Open the Integration Suite Tenant and navigate to Design –>Integrations and API’s

          2. Create an Integration Package or open an existing one.

          3. Navigate to the Artifacts tab and click on Edit in the top right corner

            4. Click on Add drop down and select Data Type from the list

            5. Add Data Type dialog is displayed with Create (radio button) selected by default.

            6. Enter the values for the fields Name, ID,Target Namespace, Description, select the category – Simple Type(selected by default) or Complex Type for the Datatype you want to create and click on Add or Add and Open in Editor

            7. On Click of Add, the Data Type artifact with the provided name gets created and is listed in the Artifacts list page

            8. On Click of Add and Open in Editor, the Data Type artifact gets created with the provided name and the artifact gets opened in the Editor in display mode.

            9. The Editor contains three tabs : Overview,Structure and XSD.The Structure is shown by default when the artifact is opened. It displays the structure of the datatype in a tree table with the following columns :

              • Name : Contains the Name of the node(element or attribute).For Root node the name is same as the name of the Datatype and it cannot be edited.
              • Category : This column shows whether the root element has subnodes or not. For root node it is either Simple type or Complex Type and for submodes it can be either Element or Attribute. You cannot change values in this column.
              • Type: This column displays the type with which the node is defined.Here you select a built-in data type or reference to an existing data type for an element or attribute. You must specify a type for attributes.
              • Occurrence: Determines how often elements occur.For attributes, you can determine whether the attribute is optional or required.
              • Restrictions : This column displays the facets (if any) defined incase the node is defined by a built-in primitive type or a user defined Simple type Datatype

              9. Switch to edit mode and to define/build the Structure of the Datatype. On selecting the first row(rootnode),the Add drop down in the table header gets enabled and also the details of the row are displayed in the right side section of the editor.

              10. Simple Type Data Type :

              • No child nodes can be added
              • Root node is defined by string built-in primitive datatype.
              • Click on the root node and the Properties sheet which contains the details of the node selected is displayed on the right side of the editor. In Edit mode, user can edit the Type, define the restrictions applicable for the Type selected.

              11. Complex Type Data Type :

              To add child nodes:

              • Click on the root node and the Add drop down in the table header gets enabled.

              Add –>Element to add child element node

              Add –>Attribute to add attribute node

              Add –>Rows to add multiple Elements/Attributes

              • Click on the newly added node and define the details in the Properties sheet

              12. Once the Structure is defined,Click on Save to save the artifact as Draft, Save as Version to save the artifact as versioned artifact.

              13. XSD tab displays the read only view of the xsd schema of the Datatype artifact

                Create MessageType:

                1. Open the Integration Suite Tenant and navigate to Design –>Integrations and API’s

                2. Create an Integration Package or open an existing one.

                3. Navigate to the Artifacts tab and click on Edit in the top right corner

                4. Click on Add drop down and select Message Type from the list

                  5. Add Message Type dialog is opened

                  6. Enter the values for the fields Name, ID, XMLNamespace, Datatype to be Used, Description, and click on Add or Add and Open in Editor

                  7. On Click of Add, Message Type artifact gets created and is listed in the Artifacts list page

                    8. On Click of Add and Open in Editor, MessageType artifact gets created and the artifact gets opened in the DataType Editor with Structure tab loaded by default in non-edit mode. The rootnode Name would be same as the Message Type name, Category as Element and Type as Data Type Used (if selected in the Add Message Type dialog)

                    9. Overview tab in Edit mode is as shown below :

                      Introduction

                      Looping Process Call refers to a way of repeating processes in an SAP program using loops, calling one or more processes within a specific cycle. This can be useful, especially when working with large data sets or when automating a series of tasks. we are working with large datasets, fetching them all at once increases RAM consumption.

                      With this method, we retrieve our data in fragments based on a certain condition, and after the loop ends, our data is merged as a whole. From a performance perspective, we alleviate the strain on memory. It reduces processing time and enhances performance. It simplifies our overall data analysis.

                      Now, we will design a scenario in cloud integration. We will fetch large data from OData and loop it through a specific condition (looping process call). Then, we will observe the results together.

                      Prerequisite: BTP Cockpit access and Integration Suite

                      Step 1. First, we will create a CPI link to be able to make calls to the service.

                      Step 2. We specify that the looping process call will work according to the condition expression specified in the “condition expression” field. By stating “.hasMoreRecords contains ‘true’, we indicate that the loop will continue to run as long as there are multiple records.

                      Step 4. We use the “select” clause to choose which fields we want to retrieve from the Orders entity.

                      Our method is GET.

                      We need to mark “Process in Pages”. If we don’t mark it, the system will send all the data at once after entering the loop once.

                      Step 5. After passing through the filter, the data will no longer include “Orders” but will start with “Order.” This is because we need the information of “Orders/Order” due to sending the data in fragments. After completing the process of sending fragmented data, we will merge it in the “Message Body” of the Content Modifier.

                      Step 6. ${property.payloadStack}${in.body} : We use it to continue adding each incoming fragmented data to the body. You can take a look at it.

                      Step 7. We add the “Orders” tag, which we ignored with the filter, to this content modifier. Once the loop is completely finished, we add the merged data as a property.

                      Step 11. Save and Deploy. Then once we have created a CPI link, we need to call it using the GET method in Postman after the deployment.

                      Step 13. It entered the loop a total of 6 times, but on the 6th request, since there was no data left inside, it combined the data sent in fragments, exited the loop, and continued to ‘End’.

                      When we look at our first loop, it indicates that in the first request, it fetched the first 200 records from the entire data set and provided the information that the next loop would start with OrderID 10448 using the expression “$skiptoken=10447”.

                      In each loop, as it adds data, it indicates that there were 400 records in the 2nd request, and when it enters the 3rd loop, it won’t fetch the same initial 400 records again. Similarly, it shows that in the next loop, the data will start with OrderID 10648.

                      The important point to note is that it continues to loop as long as the condition we set is met, meaning it enters the loop as long as it evaluates to true.

                      When we check the final step, we understand that this condition returns false, indicating that it has fetched all the data inside.

                      Due to the condition, since the Loop process has ended, we receive information that the last data has the OrderID number 11047.

                      Finally, I wanted to add an email adapter. It notifies all the information via email.

                      I will explain how to automatically install SSL certificates on CPI using SAP’s APIs.You can follow the steps below to set a timer and have it loaded automatically, without having to manually check whether it has expired or not.

                      Automatically update system certificates before they expire with SAP CPI and Groovy (openssl command)

                      Instead of manually updating the certificate, we can automatically install the certificate before it expires with this API created by SAP.

                      You can use CPI APIs to update a certificate in Keystore.

                      In this scenario, we will perform a PUT operation to the /CertificateResources path of the CPI API below.

                      MethodResource Path
                      PUT/CertificateResources(‘{Hexalias}’)/$value

                      We must convert the name (alias) of the certificate we want to update in CPI KeyStore to hexadecimal.

                      In this scenario, we will update the certificate for facebook

                      Note: For hexadecimal format, you can use text to hexadecimal converter online.

                      The URL to be sent in the put operation:

                      In the following section, we write the sDEREncode of the certificate to the body and thus the certificate in the keystore is updated.

                      This is the continuation and final part of a short blog series. You can find the previous posts here and here. In this segment, I delve into middle-layer development, encompassing prompt engineering and context steering for GPT models. This part is particularly intriguing from an AI integration perspective, especially in terms of prompt design, and holds significant potential for future enhancements.

                      Let’s take another look at the prompt diagram from the first post:

                      Prompt structure

                      As you can observe, most of the prompt elements are hidden from the end user. Only the intelligent part, which comprises questions or dialog, is visible in the chat window. This approach is logical as it allows for comprehensive control over the user’s interactions with the model while keeping unnecessary details away from the user. Additional information, such as a list of apps in technical format, roles, etc., remains invisible to the user. Ultimately, it is crucial to validate the user’s inputs to ensure they do not pose any harm to any system integrated with the GPT model.

                      In this case, the prompt includes only basic information. This interface version does not validate the user’s input and does not utilize additional data sources, like vector databases. We will explore these aspects in later stages.

                      Implementation

                      We take the earlier-described format of the prompt and mold it into a more concrete structure:

                      We’re not using Examples in this prompt, however you can imagine it as another section, titled Examples. In our case this is not needed, because bot is not responding in one, forced way. It has a lot of freedom to interpret what user says and build replies. Still it needs to follow ruleset its got and its role (that’s why in DEMO version it says that it won’t translate anything for the user, because it is not its role). In a nutshell, we’re telling model what is its role (technical assistant), name, and what rules it should follow when answering questions. We also provide context for a model, to work with (so no fine tuning/training is necessary to use it). Contact persons and applications are escaped JSON strings. These you can find below:

                      The best part is that there’s no defined format for such information. That’s the main strength of LLMs – they’re really good at natural language communication and analysis. As long as the input makes sense for a human, there’s a big chance it makes sense for a model too. It doesn’t even need to be in JSON format; you can see in the prompt itself that the role and behavior of the model are defined using plain text. However, it is beneficial to have some structure and separate sections from each other. A better effect is achieved than just having a massive text blob. For example, each dataset is separated by “`, and starts with a new line. Also, the model’s behavior is formatted as a list to make it easier for the model to understand.

                      Cloud Integration

                      SHODAN uses a single endpoint (iFlow) to exchange data with the GPT model. At this point, it is relatively simple, but I’ve left a few open options to extend it in the future:

                      Main iFlow

                      S01-S05 are scripts used in this iFlow. All of them are described in the next section. As you can see, the iFlow is pretty simple and straightforward. There are two main routes:

                      • Route 2: executed when the initial call is received. It contains a mocked welcome message.
                      • Route 1: the main processing route, including the OpenAI API call.

                      There are two external calls:

                      • Get system message: This is a call to another iFlow, which prepares the system message, including the whole prompt. In this case, it is hardcoded, but leaving it as another iFlow gives us an easy option to enhance it in the future.
                      • Call API: This is an OpenAI API call, using the completions endpoint, which is basically a chat (similar to how you can interact with chatGPT). More details can be found in the API’s documentation.

                      S01 sets up each API request. It is executed just before the API call in the “Set request” step. Here’s what happens in this step:

                      APIKey is retrieved from the flow configuration and set as the Authorization header.
                      Current body is retrieved. It stores the system message we want to set for the API call.
                      Original body is retrieved (in the “Get params” step, it is set to the flow’s property RequestBody).
                      Messages are retrieved from the request’s body as an array.

                      The system message is set as the first message in the array. (This is actually not necessary; we can pass the system message at any point. However, I didn’t know that when initially developing the whole thing.)

                      S02 is something you can skip. I added it because the chat can be used by anyone, and I wanted to keep information on used tokens in CI itself, with the option to extend it using HANA or on-prem DB, and store it there. You can retrieve this information at any time from the API itself, so it is something extra, but it has the potential to be extended in the future by adding user logs, additional validation, and detecting possible breaches. We can then keep it all in a single place on our side. However, the flow will work without this script and step, so it can be removed.

                      S03 checks if there’s any payload at all and is executed as the first step (Check request). The whole solution is designed in a way that the Fiori app’s first request is always empty because nothing is stored on the front-end side (including any welcome message). Such an empty message is returned from CI. To detect whether it is the first call or another call, the script checks if there’s any body at all. If not, then the property “send” is not set, and the flow chooses Route 2 as the processing route.

                      S04 retrieves model’s response (single message) and adds it to current message’s stack (sent from front-end app). API always replies with latest message only, so it is up to developer to store it and build chat and conversation history. In our case, I’m using originally stored message, and just adds new one, retrieved from API at the end. Fiori app, bounds a list of JSON objects, so latest message is displayed at the bottom of the list (as all of us are used to).

                      I think it is self-explanatory; all parameters can be found in the HTTP channels or scripts. The APIUsageDatastore can be removed if you’re not planning to store usage information in the CI’s datastore.

                      Prompt iFlow

                      Currently we’re using hardcoded values, containing system prompt, sent to GPT model. But, to make it more flexible, this hardcoded prompt is embedded in separated iFlow:

                      How does it work?

                      Let’s put all pieces together and check how application actually works. For this purpose, we need enable trace in CI for main iFlow, to be able to check messages and processing. Monitor→Integrations and APIs→Manage Integration Content→Find your iFlow→Status Details Tab:

                      First, start with launchpad where shell plugin is enabled (check my previous blog entry)

                      Open chat window, clicking on button next to SAP logo:

                      At this point, we can already check trace on CI side, because initial call was made, so Route 2 should be executed to retrieve welcome message (and it was, because we can see it in the chat).

                      • First 4 parameters are technical data, we don’t use, so we can ignore it;
                      • Choices array is what model generates in response to our call. As you can see, there’s just single message, with role (assistant).                       Scenerio:

                      Customer Order data is coming from sender using SOAP adaptor. CPI should generate order_no acc. to the given format. After generating order_no we need to add a field company_name. After this we need to check the action is Pending/Not_Available/Delivered.

                      If its pending then its end the flow, if its delivered then it direct to another IFlow using Process Direct in which we are generating TransactionId according to the given format. One its generated it should send the mail to the customer and the company admin mail, if its Not_Available it should end and send the mail to the customer and admin that your order is not available.

                      Order_no: random alphanumeric string of length 6 and concat it with quantity and Item as below.
                      
                      Example: Item:- xyz, Quantity: 1 => Order_no = AB12CDxyz1
                      
                      TransactionId:- Random alpha character string of length 10 and concat it with the Order_no.

                      Let’s understand pagination first,

                      In the context of OData (Open Data Protocol), pagination refers to the practice of dividing a large set of data into smaller, more manageable chunks or pages. This is done to improve the performance of data retrieval and to reduce the amount of data transferred over the network. Pagination is a common technique in APIs and web services to handle large result sets efficiently.

                      In OData, pagination is typically achieved through the use of query parameters, specifically the $skip and $top parameters. Here’s a brief explanation of these parameters:

                      1. $skip: This parameter is used to specify the number of items that should be skipped from the beginning of the result set. It is often used in conjunction with $top to implement paging. For example, if you want to retrieve results 11 to 20, you would set $skip=10.
                      2. $top: This parameter is used to specify the maximum number of items to be returned in the result set. It works in conjunction with $skip to define the size of each page. For example, if you want to retrieve the first 10 items, you would set $top=0.
                      3. $inlinecount: This parameter is used to get total count of records by passing value “allpages” to this parameter.

                      By using $skip,$top and $inlinecount together, you can navigate through the result set in chunks, effectively implementing pagination.

                      For instance, to retrieve the second page of results (items 501-600), you might use $top=100 and $skip=500.

                      Now, you have a scenario where you need to fetch the full load from the Business Partner API or any other API of S/4 Hana public cloud with 500 records per page.

                      Here, $inlinecount parameter will come in the picture.

                      First get call to the API with https://<S4hanaAPIHostName>:<Port>/API_BUSINESS_PARTNER/A_BusinessPartner?$top=500&$skip=0$inlinecount=allpages

                      in response, you will get 500 record if records are equal to 500 or more else full load will come in first page it self.

                      Along with these records, you will also get count of total records in “count” element

                      if (count>500)

                      then calculate the number of API call you need to make based on total count

                      After every API call, Increase the value of skip by 500.

                      To do all this, you need to write a program in language supported by you application or middleware system.

                      Let’s call this API in CPI with Pagination

                      In CPI, OData adapter can manage all parameters, we need to just manage the number of times API should be called by “looping process call” artifact.

                      As you can see in the below picture, fetching data from S/4 Hana, transform the data in Salesforce Soap API format and transferring to Salesforce system is happing in “Local Integration Process 1”

                      And Integration Process is only use to call “Local Integration Process 1” in loop.

                      In OData adapter, just tick “Process in Pages” and enter the total number or records should be called in a single call in “Page size”.

                      Every time when API call fetches the data, a property “${property.<RECEIVER>.<Channel>.hasMoreRecords} ” is set with true if there are still records to fetch from S/4 Hana or set with false if no records are left to fetch

                      This property we need to set in Lopping Process Call to give the condition for stopping loop

                      Receiver: S4Hana

                      Channel: ODataS4

                      Condition in Lopping Process Call: ${property.S4Hana.ODataS4.hasMoreRecords} contains ‘true’
