Introduction

This blog post contains a deep-dive into the use of Consolidation Groups during the Packing process in SAP EWM. The blog also contains some “lessons learned” and describes solutions for common issues in this area.

Deep-dive into Consolidation Groups during Packing

SAP EWM uses Consolidation Groups in the outbound process to determine which delivery items can or cannot be picked or packed together into a handling unit (HU). This allows you – for example – to combine delivery items for the same customer into one Handling Unit.

First of all, it’s important to understand that each Outbound Delivery Order item is assigned to a Consolidation Group, see screenshot below.

Via tcode /SCWM/DSGR, you can maintain rules which determine how Outbound Delivery Orders are being consolidated. Alternatively, you can use a 1:1 relationship between Outbound Delivery Order and Consolidation Group, essentially keeping delivery items for the same Outbound Delivery Order together.

So, how can you use this Consolidation Group during the Outbound Packing process?

In my example, I have a 1:1 relationship between Outbound Delivery Order and Consolidation Group, meaning that all ODO-items for one ODO will have the same Consolidation Group. I want to make sure that all ODO-items are being sent to the same Packing Work Center, so that they can be packed together into one Shipping-HU.

To accomplish this, I’m using Putaway Rule “3 – Consolidation Group” in the Storage Type which represents the Packing Area. Screenshot:

In this example, I’m using a Pick-Pack-Stage process, where the Packing process is being executed in above mentioned Storage Type. My Outbound Delivery Order is being picked from two different picking areas, using two different Warehouse Orders. During pick-WT creation, SAP EWM will determine the destination Storage Bin for each Warehouse Task.

So, because my Warehouse Tasks are assigned to the same Consolidation Group, SAP EWM will send them to the same Destination Storage Bin, which represents one of my Packing Work Centers. This way, we can make sure that all Products can be packed together in the same shipping-HU.

How does EWM keep track of Consolidation Group – Packing Bin assignments?

In table /SCWM/BINDST, EWM keeps a list of all Consolidation Groups per Packing Bin. A specific Packing Bin can be assigned to many different Consolidation Groups, thus making sure that different Outbound Delivery Orders can be packed at the same Packing Work Center. Screenshot:

In the SAP EWM Best Practice setup, the table entries for a specific Bin are being cleared as soon as the Packing Bin is marked empty. This to make sure that the table is not being cluttered with old, irrelevant Consolidation Groups. The relevant customizng for this functionality can be found in the SPRO > SCM EWM > EWM > Goods Receipt Process > Strategies > Configure Deletion of Fixed Bin Assignments. Screenshot:

Customizing – Delete if bin is empty

Lessons learned

Over the years, I have used this functionality in several different implementations. Although this functionality proves to be useful, there are a few issues/ attention points which must be considered.

Lesson Leared 1 – Table /SCWM/BINDST

Although I have configured the “Delete Consolidation Group assignment if bin is empty” setting for my Packing Work Center, I often notice that this is not working as expected in a real-life environment. There are a two reasons for this:

i. A Packing Bin is only considered empty if there are no Products or HU’s on the Storage Bin, and if there are no open pick-WT’s to this Packing Bin. In real-life this doesn’t happen that often, so it might happen that table /SCWM/BINDST is not cleared from the old Consolidation Groups

ii. Second reason is that even if the Packing bin appears to be empty, the “Empty” flag is not set and the table entries do net get cleared. Most of the time, this is being caused by an inconsistency in the Capacity Check of the Packing Bin. It is therefore highly recommended to perform a daily Capacity Check for the Packing Storage Type via the EWM Check Monitor. Preferably you should schedule this check and fix capacity check issues automatically via reports /SCWM/R_CHM_PRF_RUN and /SCWM/R_CHM_LOG_ACT.

SAP does provide a custom report which allows you to manually clear entries from table /SCWM/BINDTS, but this report must be implemented via SAP Note 1560507 so it’s not available in standard SAP.

Lesson Learned 2 – Consolidation Group number range

if you are using the SAP Best Practice warehouse setup, you will notice that the Consolidation Group number range is rather limited, usually from 50.000 to 99.999. Once the end of the Number Range has been reached, EWM starts over again with number 50.000.

Depending on the number of Outbound Delivery Orders, this means that you’ll eventually have different Outbound Delivery Orders using the same Consolidation Group. This should not be a big issue, but if the above mentioned table /CWM/BINDTS was not cleared for a long time, that Consolidation Group might still be assigned to a Packing Bin. EWM would take this entry into account during pick-WT creation, and would assign the new pick-WT’s to the Packing bin which was used for the previous Outbound Delivery Order which used the same Consolidation Group.

The solution for this is pretty easy: increase the Consolidation Group number range so that a Consolidation Group is not being used multiple times. However, still it’s important to keep table /SCWM/BINDST as clean as possible.

Lesson Learned 3 – Using WT-Generic in combination with Ptwy Rule Consolidation Group

In one of my recent implementations, the client wanted to freely choose their own Packing Bin, so not based using a predefined Packing Bin based on Consolidation Group. To achieve this, I set the WT-Generic setting in the Packing Storage Type to 1 – Storage Type and Storage Section. By doing so, EWM leaves the destination Storage Bin empty, allowing the operator to freely choose a Packing Bin. Screenshot:

Although this setting works fine, it is recommended to also change the Putaway Rule from 3 – Consolidation Group to 4 – General Storage Area. If you don’t do this, it might happen that the system will eventually assign a specific Packing Bin to the WT, as the Consolidation Group Putaway Rule will overrule the WT-Generic setting. Furthermore, you should also change your POSC-customizing and make sure that the Packing Step is not Rules-Based. Screenshot:

Introduction

Subcontracting is the process where child materials (components) are issued to an external vendor for final assembly. In this blog, I will try to explain the configuration and steps required to accomplish the subcontracting process with EWM managed.

Configuration required

Document type and Item type integration:

When we issue the component material from our premises for the subcontracting process, an outbound delivery will be created, and that outbound delivery will then be integrated with the warehouse management system (EWM).

To obtain the document type and item type configuration, activate the BC set- /SCWM/DLV_OUTBOUND_SUBCONTRACTOR.

After BC set has activated, we can see the configuration values as below,

To start delivery integration between ERP and EWM, we must map the ERP document type and item type to the EWM system.

Map Document Types from ERP System to EWM:

Assign the delivery type to plant:

Maintain the subcontracting delivery type (LB) against the plant so that the system will select this delivery type to make an outbound delivery when the components are issued from the plant (issuing plant or supplying plant).

How the subcontracting outbound delivery gets the ship-to-party:

To create an outbound delivery, the “ship-to-party” (customer) must be present. Allow the system to pick up the ship-to-party from the supplier, create a plant as the customer, and assign it to the subcontracting vendor.

Maintain the sales area to the plant:

The sales area maintained to the plant will be used to establish the shipping details in an outbound delivery. And extend your material to this sales area.

Process steps:

Outbound delivery is now created, as seen in VL03N and delivery also distributed to EWM system.

Goods issue from EWM storage type:

Outbound delivery has been created in the ERP and distributed to the EWM system to pick and do the goods issue.

T code: /SCWM/PRDO or Fiori App- Run outbound delivery

Create a warehouse task,

Open the app “Process warehouse task” and confirm it,

Warehouse task now confirmed,

Do the goods issue,

Goods issue completed and see the material document from the outbound delivery,

Once the components issue in the system is completed, the components are shipped to the subcontracting supplier physically. And once the supplier has finished the assembly, we need to receive the material at our warehouse.

Subcontracting Finished goods receipt:

T code: VL31N (create an inbound delivery and distribute to the EWM system)

Now, process the goods receipt in EWM system

T code: /SCWM/PRDI or Fiori App-Change inbound deliveries

Confirm the open put away warehouse task,

Once the warehouse task is confirmed, the goods receipt will be confirmed automatically (or we may execute the goods receipt first, then the warehouse task)

Introduction

The goal of the integration of production and warehouse management is the staging of products in time, the proper posting of the consumption of the components from the production process, and the receipt of the final products in the warehouse.

In SAP EWM there are two types of Production integration

1) Delivery Based production

2) Advanced production Integration

Delivery Based Production Integration:

For the delivery-based integration, the ERP system creates deliveries for materials to be staged, and also for materials that are consumed, and sends these deliveries to EWM. Quantities to be staged and consumed are entered in ERP, while in EWM, only the physical movement is triggered and confirmed.

Advanced Production Integration:

In the Advanced Production Integration, a production material request (PMR) for a manufacturing order is created in EWM when ERP sends a message containing the information from production. Details about quantities for staging and consumption are controlled with entries in EWM.

In Delivery Based Production there are two scenarios

  • Delivery Based Production with IMSL (Non-EWM Storage location)
  • Delivery Based Production with Two SAP EWM-managed storage locations in one warehouse

In this blog I will explain the Delivery Based Production Integration with Inventory Managed Storage location(Non-EWM Storage location)

Delivery Based Production with IMSL:

MM-IM Managed storage location The product stocks are not managed in the SAP EWM system; they are managed in the SAP ERP system at MM-IM storage location level. Staging is an outbound delivery from an SAP EWM perspective, and, from an SAP ERP perspective, a posting change to a storage location outside of the SAP EWM system

To achieve this we have to go with following steps

1) Create 3 raw materials with MRP View Mandatory

2) Create 1 Finished material with MRP view & work Scheduling view Mandatory

3) Create a storage location which is Non-EWM Managed storage location

4) Create production supply area in S/4 HANA

5) Create work center in S/4 HANA

6) create a Bill of Materials(BOM) for Finished product

7) Create Routing for Finished product

8) Create control cycles in S/4 HANA for Raw Materials

We see lots of hanging queues from EWM to ERP system due to the various reasons. Some of these may be resolved with the master data corrections or number ranges just to name a few. There are few related to the transactional data such as posting period closure or duplicate HUs etc.

It is a very tedious activity for the technical/functional team member to clear these failed queues to keep both the systems in sync..

If these failed queues can’t be resolved using the standard procedures, then last option is debug the code in the production environment and change the value during the runtime. This is not a good practice but no other options.

To overcome this issue, SAP has provided a simple solution to edit the failed queues. The queue contents can be edited or deleted based on the settings provided. The changes can be done at the field level where in the deletion happens at the table level.

The user with having the relevant roles can edit the queues and make the changes. Once the changes are saved, the system processes the same again.

This blog post explains in brief related to hanging queues editing in SAP ERP from SAP EWM which are failing in ERP system.

Note: Important tables to get the fields which can be edited.

Whitelist for Editing of Queues from EWM: System- /SPE/TMQWLCMP_S

Whitelist for Editing of Queues from EWM: Components – /SPE/TMQWLCMP_C

Whitelist for Editing of Queues from EWM: System Settings – /SPE/TMQWLPAR_S

Steps:

– Editing the field Settings

  • Run the transaction code /SPE/MQWL_CUS and the below screen will be displayed.
  • Select the qRFC function module and double click on the ‘qRFC Messages: Parameters’.
  • Select the checkbox against qRFC parameter name
  • Select the qRFC Parameter Name and double click on ‘qRFC Messages: Fields’.

Note : The field name list is predefined and can’t be changed.

  • Save the changes in a customizing transport request.

– Deleting the Table/Structure Settings from the queue contents.

  • Maintain the below configuration setting following the above steps:

Note : Delete option will not have field level selections.

Note: The above steps can be skipped in Emergency Mode in Production system by using the transaction code ‘/SPE/MQWL_APPL’.

Testing :

Note: Only the relevant steps are shown here. The errored

– Editing the fields in the hanging/failed queue.

  • Run the transaction code ‘SMQ2’, the below list of failed queues shown:
  • Select the relevant queue and click on the display icon.
  • Double click on queue name or status to display the error related to the queue failure.
  • Double click on the queue name to display the below queue container screen:
  • Click on the change icon to display the below screen.
  • Double click on the table parameter ‘HEADER_DEADLINES’ to display the editable fields with the current values passed.
  • Update the value of the field Timetype ‘WS GOODS ISSUE LIKP and ID RECEIVED ON DOCK’ accordingly and click on button ‘Replace’ or ‘Replace and Execute’.

Note: ‘Replace’ button saves the changes and the ‘Replace and Execute’ will perform the saves and executes the queue in a single step.

  • Refresh the queue to display the below screen,
  • Process the queue. If the queue gets processed successfully then it disappearance from the screen.
  • Run the transaction code ‘SLG1’ to view the application log related to the changes made to the queue.

The system replace the original TID with a new one

– Deleting the tables/structure in the hanging/failed queue. Deletion of HU details

  • Run the transaction code SMQ2, the list of hanging/failed queues displayed.
  • The queue status has error details.
  • Double click on the queue name to display the below screen.
  • Double click on the queue name and then click on the change button
  • Select the HU related structure/tables and delete them.

After deletion:

  • Click on ‘Replace and Execute’ button, then the system displays the below information.
  • Refresh the previous screen to check the changes whether are processed successfully or any other errors occurred again.
  • Run the transaction code SLG1 to verify the changes made to the failed queue.
  • Verify the inbound delivery document flow.

Note: The above steps can be performed using the warehouse monitor.

  • Run the transaction code /SCWM/MON and select the folder ‘Tools’ and then ‘Message Queue’. The system displays the below pop up screen and then press ‘Execute’.
  • The below information gets displayed on the screen.
  • Select the row and click on ‘Data Container’ button to display the queue container. The system displays the queue container.
  • Continue the desired operations mentioned above to change the fields or delete the structure/tables passed in the queue .container

Note: All the scenarios were tested in SAP S/4 2021 system.

I – IM Physical Inventory

Step 1: Create Physical Inventory Document & Active PI document

Enter PI doc that is created in previous step, enter PI doc number and plant to print.

Step 3: Enter count result

Tcode: MI04 Enter count manually

After you have the count result, enter the count manually for each line.

Save the count result and later you can change the count by Tcode MI05 or do the Recount by MI11.

Step 4: Clear Difference

Tcode: MI07 – Post difference

When the count result has the difference, you have to clear off those lines with a reason code.

Post the transaction then a material document is auto created to record the change and adjust the quantity.

Check document posting by MB51.

Movement type 701 for stock increasing and Movement type 702 for stock decreasing (Unrestricted use).

Alternative options

Tcode: MI08 – Post and Count difference

MI08 is a combination of MI04 & MI07, you can enter count then clear difference at the same time.

First steps is still required to create PI document before you can execute MI08.

Tcode MI10 – All steps at once Create Document, Count and Post difference

MI10 is a combination of MI01 & MI04 & MI07, you can create PI doc, enter count then clear difference at the same time.

That’s really a powerful Tcode, so make sure you have all the correct data on hand before executing.

This report gives an overview of all differences in the plant at the real time.

You can link to another function from this report. Ex: Post difference (MI07), Change count (MI05),…

Note that if difference is cleared off, it will not be shown here anymore.

II – WM Physical Inventory

Step 1: Create Physical Inventory Document & Active PI document

Tcode LI01N Create PI doc

Enter one or multiple Bins of specific Storage type to count.

You have to manually enter single Bin which need to be counted.

Active document and Save to create PI doc. Bin is blocked.

Tcode LX16 – Create PI for continuous Inventory

This way will auto list all the Bins in specific Storage Type. Then you only need to select Bins in the list and active to create PI doc.

Step 2: Print Physical Inventory Document (Optional)

Tcode LI04 Print PI doc

Select PI doc number and printer.

Example for WM Inventory List

Step 3: Enter count result

Option 1: Manual enter count

Tcode LI11N – Enter count manually

Enter the count, which lines that count result is zero, mark at “Zero count”.

Option 2: RF gun

Prerequisite: Assign user ID to PI doc.

RF gun link as below or Tcode LM50

First scan Bin to start the count > Scan HU the first time to recognize that HU is in the Bin > Scan HU the second time will trigger screen to enter quantity or mark as zero count > After all HU are scanned, F1 Save to end count in this Bin.

Note: At screen number 4 – if you press F9 BnEm – Means that you have finish counting the Bin, any HU is missing will be counted as Zero.

Step 4: Clear Difference WM

Tcode LI20 Clear off at WM level

Once you write off WM quantity will be updated, but not updated yet in IM. Bin is unblocked.

No material document is created at this step.

Step 5: Clear Difference IM

Tcode LI21- Clear off at IM level

All the difference will come to this list, review once again then Write off.

At this point, material document is created and stock quantity is updated at IM level.

Display Material document.

III – EWM Physical Inventory

Step 1: Create Physical Inventory Document & Active PI document

Tcode /SCWM/PI_CREATE

Select PI procedure first.

Find by Storage Bin or Material number, a list will be displayed. Active & save to create PI doc.

Note that 1 PI doc will be created for 1 Storage Type.

Step 2: Print Physical Inventory Document (Optional)

Tcode /SCWM/PRPI_DOC – Print PI doc

Enter Whs number and PI document, printer to print.

Note that Condition report for PI print need to be set up in advance before printing.

Can also use /SCWM/PI_PROCESS to print.

Example for EWM Inventory count list.

Step 3: Enter count result

Option 1: Enter Count manually

Tcode /SCWM/COUNTLIST

Enter the count manually or mark as Zero count.

Option 2: RF count

Follow the path as below.

Scan WO number, this info is printed in PI doc or check /SCWM/PI_PROCESS to know WO number.

Firstly scan the Bin to be counted or select Bin in the list > Next verify Material and enter count Qty. F11 to save the count.

Note: Because this example is non HU management to need to scan material number instead of HU.

Step 4: Post Physical Inventory Document

Tcode /SCWM/PI_PROCESS

Select document and Post.

Status of the PI doc is updated as Posted. At this time, EWM quantity is updated, but IM qty is not yet updated.

Step 5: Clear difference

Tcode /SCWM/DIFF_ANALYZER

Review the difference once again before posting.

Choose Post and Save. At this time Material document is created to update quantity at IM level.

This blog post is intended to provide the reader details for SAP EWM RF development.

As part of this blog, I am going to discuss the functional aspects for RF menu changes, Function code key changes & addition of new screen in the RF Flow.

Menu changes –

We need to create new Presentation profile and assign it to Warehouse.

All other RF Menu configurations are done with respect to new Presentation profile created here.

RF Menu manager can be accessed with following Navigation.

The Standard SAP presentation profile- ‘****’ & Personalization profile – ‘**’ can be copied to own Presentation/Personalization profile.

Standard SAP Presentation profile – **** and Personalization profile – ** Menu

In the Copied Presentation profile – Z001 and Personalization profile – ZP We added few additional menus’ in the Node – ‘Manual Selection’.

You can do all your Menu node changes in this configuration path i.e. Addition of New Node in the Menu path (Just Drag it from left pane where there are all the logical transactions and drop it in the right pane in the required Menu path), Renaming the description, Changing the existing sequence (UP/DOWN) or Deletion of any irrelevant node/sub node etc.

E.g. Renaming the Description

Function Key Changes –

We had business requirement to have 8 Function keys in the screen instead of standard SAP delivered 4.

In order to achieve it, we copied standard Display profile – ** and created new one.

While copying it, we can change the No of Push Button’s Quantity, Screen height/Width, Push button’s length Etc.

We need to assign the Display profile created above to Presentation device in easy access – /N/SCWM/PRDVC.

We can create separate Presentation device for RF scanner’s, Voice terminals and assign the Display profile to them.

When Standard Display profile-** is assigned to Presentation device, it derives 4 Function keys.

The Presentation device is assigned to Resource in /N/SCWM/RSRC.

When Display profile- ** is assigned to Presentation device, it derives 4 Function keys.

Now if we assign the Display profile – ZP which was configured to have 8 Push button’s then RF processing shows 6 Push buttons i.e. Maximum 8 can be shown on the screen.

The Push buttons can be added or Changed in the Configuration node – ‘Define function code profile’.

We can get Logical transaction in RF Menu screen with ‘Ctrl+Shift+F1’.

Go to Customizing, Select the logical transaction and further go to Define function code profile.

You need to select the entry as per Logical transaction/step with respective presentation profile/personalization profile/push button Quantity.

As you can see here there are entries with Push button Qty – 8 and Push button Qty – 4 so you need to make the changes for the respective combination of Presentation profile/display profile/Push button qty. and then all the Corresponding Function keys will be available in the particular RF transaction.

The Sequence for Push button’s from PB1 to PB16 can be assigned or changed here.

The 6 Push button’s available above are assigned in the below config node.

Addition of new Logical transaction

Business asked to add new RF screen’s/Menu’s in the existing flow to print the Bin/Product label. We had separate development for this Product/Bin label print and as part of this Blog I am going to discuss as how we added that in the Existing RF flow.

Separate logical transactions were created for Bin Label & Product label.

We need to assign the Transaction step flow for all the relevant Function keys.

E.g. Push button Print was a trigger for Bin label print so that function code needs to be configured here and Function module needs to be assigned.

SAP EWM RF flow needs PBO (Process before output) and PAI (Process after Input) Function modules for every RF screen and corresponding Function module needs to be assigned in this Node.

Function Code – INIT is to initialize the screen so it has PBO Function module and next when Push button ‘Print’ is triggered the assigned function module here will take of the printing logic.

The Validation for particular Field e.g. in this case we got Material validated after entry and corresponding FM /rest of the details needs to be assigned here.

The required function keys can be assigned here.

In the Node – ‘Map logical transaction Step to Sub-screen’, the Sub screen no and FM can be assigned.

Once above Steps are done, the Screen development is done by developer and result is following RF screen – 9204 for logical transaction – ZPRNTB.

Small trick when working with Web browser link to test RF flows –

Some times when we are working on the RF flow with Web browser link then reading a screen’s detail is not feasible. So instead of navigating to Tcode – /n/scwm/rfui and getting the screen details with ‘Ctrl+Shift+F1’ we can read screen program and screen number as follows.

Click ‘Ctrl+C’ on your web browser link. Click on Properties tab and ‘Ctrl+F’. Then Search keyword – Template and you would get the details for RF screen program- /scwm/saplrf_picking and screen no – 302 in this case.
